Party Tips

Set Limits

  • Limit the number of children to a manageable level.  This will depend on the amount of space available, (home or yard), age of participants, (the younger the birthday child the fewer friends they "need" to have a memorable day), and your comfort level.  If you must invite all 32 of Johnny's classmates, be sure to have enough activities to engage them.

  • Limit the length of time for the party.  The younger the children the less time is necessary.  An hour or two is plenty.  Expect parents to stay for toddlers and preschoolers, (even k-1st graders.)    For older kids, let parents know if it is a drop off event or if you would like them to stay.   Recruit these parents to help with activities or games.

Choose a Theme

Theme the party.  It can be a favorite character (TV or book based), sports activity or other favorite thing. Let your child help make this decision.  Tie as much as you can to this theme: invitations, decorations, favors, activities, thank-you cards, refreshments and cake!

Plan Activities

Organize the time into planned activities.

  •   While guests arrive: a quiet activity or craft project.
  • When all your guests have arrived:  2 or 3 active games or projects that will last 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.  (The younger the children are the shorter this time span should be. Some activities may last only 10 or 15 minutes. More activities are needed to fill the same amount of time.)
  •  Follow with refreshments and BD cake.
  • Presents may be opened during or after the party, depending on your school of thought and comfort level.
